Just back from a great weekend in Glenfinnan. All week the forecast had been the subject of much interest - it looked like Saturday was to be a washout - but we were going anyway! - then it changed and the expected band of rain was delayed until Saturday evening.
Picking David up at about 2 we headed up the familiar route - Stirling, Callendar, Lochearnhead, Lix Toll, Crianlarich, Tyndrum (and Real Food for a cup of tea) then down through Glen Coe to Corran and then Fort Bill. The car could do this route on its own.
After a glorious drive up - Glen Coe was showing off its best face : all jagged and alpha male - Fort William is somet
hing of a disappointment - it is like Dalkeith by the sea....without the nice bits. But there were good fish and chips before we headed down the Road to the Isles to find the accommodation for the night - a converted railway carriage on Glenfinnan station.Unique and interesting, wtith spectacular views of the nearby Corbetts (which looked sorely tempting. The idea of a week here bagging corbetts round Moidart and is more than intriguing)
.Then there was time for a wander down to the Monument to see where Bonnie Prince Charlie (French Speaking and born and educated in Rome) had come and raised his standard at the start of the 45.
Regardless of the history, a beautiful place, especially this evening, with the green hills swooping down into a blue Loch Shiel, fish jumping and swifts circling the monument. A wander to the nearby viewpoint revealed more.
It is a beautiful place steeped in history (and Harry Potter). Few views can beat this.
Part 2 will be the account of a glorious day on Sgurr nan Coireachan and Sgurr Thuilm.
