Loch Skeen
The forecast was a bit rubbish today but we still got out for a bit. It was an easy wander up to Loch Skeen in the Borders, above the Grey Mare's Tail. I'd thought about going further and revisiting some of the Donalds above the Loch but it was cold and there was snow coming in, so after a cup of coffee from the stove we headed back down.
I always forget how much I like the hills in this part of Scotland. It is quiet but stunning with deep valleys and rolling tops often easy to navigate by following fences.
A nice day out, with some great light, especially as we were coming back down to the car and down Moffat dale there were some beautiful sunbeams.
I'll have to come back here more, it has been a while

That was the walk that helped nurture my love of the hills. My primary 7 teacher (Alan Birchall - credit where credit is due) took a group of us to the borders for a weekend and took us on this walk. It was winter and I can still remember the first sight of the loch and the snow covered hills. It was like opening a window onto paradise itself.
